Rollercoaster Maths

image

Every second Thursday our Maths time becomes STEAM time - this stands for Science-Technology-Engineering-Art-Maths. STEAM is challenging and fun!

Last week we were challenged to build an addition rollercoaster that could demonstrate the number bonds to 10 (since we are doing addition and subtraction in Maths at the moment). Our materials were straws, ping pong balls, glue, tape and boxes. We had 1.5 hours and worked in pairs to complete this challenge. It was tricky but fun, and every team came up with a unique and successful design! We tested the addition rollercoasters with one ball but by putting the roller coasters together we were able to demonstrate the special relationships that some numbers have eg 6+4, 5+5, 3+7, 8+2, 9+1 by rolling multiple balls down each side and catching them all in a dish.
