Meeting Ella West

Yesterday we went to the Mosgiel Library for a writer’s workshop. We met Ella West. Her real name is Karen Trebilcock but she changed it because there were a lot of Karen’s. She is an award winning local author and she writes books for young adults. She taught us how to plan really cool stories. She said a good story starts sad and has a happy ending, she also told us that when you plan a story stick with it!

Stu and Charlotte's Hand Challenge

This is our poster about the hand. We made this poster for a challenge that Mrs Weir, our teacher, gave us. We had to explain what the human hand does and why it is so important and useful. We had to use QR codes that we scanned with the tablets to find useful websites with information.

Sam's wheelchair

In reading we have been learning how to use Groupboard, an app on our tablets.
This time we used it for sharing our ideas aboout a boy called Sam who has brittle bone disease. Our groupboard is some of the things he might like on his wheelchair. Sam was also an inventor, the wheelchairs the hospital gave him didn't work as well as he wanted so he made one that could do mostly anything.

Our Class Dog Kennel

The steps on how to make the Mitre 10 Mega dog kennel.

1.  We got told that we were receiving a dog kennel to build and decorate from Mitre 10 Mega, for a competition.

2.  We thought of design ideas and planned the kennel.

3.  Fergus and Mrs Cassie constructed it so that we could get measurements and to see what it looked like.

4.  In groups we made our final plans and started drafting the stencils that we would use to paint the kennel.

5.  We deconstructed the kennel because we couldn’t fit it through the door and it would be easier to paint and spray paint.

6.  We made our stencils on cardboard and put them in place on the kennel.

7.  We spray painted, used vivid and painted the kennel.
We then constructed it and sent it to the competition! We hope it sells for lots of money at Mitre 10 on Saturday!

The Rams

Dad, Mum and I had all the dogs we walked down the drive way and into the paddock that had 50 rams in it. The snow was up to dad's hips in some parts. And in other parts it was up to his knees. We were trying to look for the rams for dad because he thought he was missing them. As we walked further down the paddock in the bright white snow we found 30 of the rams. We knew there was still 20 more to find, so we walked up the hill and in the corner by the gate all snuggled up was the other ones. Then we looked around the hills and saw the deer playing in the snow. After that we walked back home and went sledding on the rubber boat 66. We tried my little sled but it just sank. We chose the rubber boat 66 because it had a flat bottom on it. We tried the little one because we thought it will slide well down the steep hill but it didn’t but it was still fun.

Kakapo by Libby and Charlotte

Kakapo

Kakapo are the world’s biggest parrot and they live in New Zealand. There are only 120 left in the world so they are very rare.

Kakapo can’t fly so they eat juicy fruit off the forest floor. They eat fruit off Rimu trees.

Kakapo only have chicks when the Rimu tree fruits. The tree fruits only every two or three years. So this is a big problem.

I like kakapo because they can camouflage.

Charlotte's Term Break

In the holidays I was riding my motorbike in front of dad and then I did a skid.  The mud flew out at dad.  After that dad was head to toe with mud!

The next day dad went away duck shooting in Balclutha.

Today they are going to Te Anua to shoot dad's friend, Nigel's pond .

Also in the holidays mum and I went to Mosgiel New World and we saw Libby.   Mum and I bought milk, chocolate and body spray.
